Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
As a registered voter, I am writing to ask your support in restoring funding in the amount of $84.4 million for The City University of New York. This funding is crucial as concluded in the New York State Higher Education Commission Report released in December 2007. The report finds that New York State has fallen behind in funding its public university systems in the areas of operating and capital funding. Decreased funding has led to decreased State academic competitiveness both nationally and internationally.
We recognize the difficult fiscal times, but at a time when CUNY's enrollment is at its highest point ever, the system needs State support now more than ever. Economic hardships have driven many New Yorkers into college to acquire new skills and attain additional certification. The need for faculty and the demands for space are at unprecedented levels. Budget cuts combined with growing enrollments means a serious strain on resources and an acute need to add full-time faculty and academic support personnel. Please do not allow the CUNY system to slide backwards in terms of student services, academic quality, full-time faculty numbers, educational technology and new construction projects.
Full-time faculties are the core of educational institutions. Building the faculty ranks at CUNY is vital to the advancement of the system as a whole and in developing cutting edge technology which transfers into economic development for the State. CUNY needs a predictable tuition policy to keep increases as low as possible and to help families plan to meet the costs of college.
Keep New York State's public higher education institutions nationally competitive with other States.
