Subject: Restore community college base aid to CUNY
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
I am writing to ask you to restore the $285 per FTE cut to community college funding in the New York State budget. In conjunction with the Deficit Reduction Plan passed in December, the proposed budget cuts would bring the total cuts to community colleges to $415 per FTE which is the lowest rate since 2005. CUNY now has its highest enrollments in three decades and many of its community colleges are filled to capacity.
At this time with the current national and State economic situation, more people will be unemployed and returning to the community colleges for retraining. Community colleges are essential to economic recovery. They are a pipeline to jobs. This is the wrong time to be cutting community colleges that are the critical engines of economic development. If these reductions take place, the University will have to implement service reductions at its six community colleges.
In order to provide a quality education and needed student services, CUNY need a predictable tuition policy so that students are prepared for increases in tuition and their families can plan for educational costs. CUNY students are some of the poorest in New York State and a rational tuition policy that is independent of the fiscal circumstances of New York State is imperative. Students can no longer tolerate huge increases of hundreds of dollars at one time.
Please help restore funding to community college base aid. Thank you.
Sincerely,
|
