Subject: Restore the TAP program
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
The New York State budget proposes $177 million reduction to the Tuition Assistance Program. Financial aid is an important factor in the affordability of higher education. The proposed change to TAP that most affects CUNY is the $75 decrease in all TAP awards. This would affect almost 69,000 students at CUNY.
Another proposed change includes increasing academic standards and minimum credits earned in order to be eligible for TAP. This proposal penalizes working students and students with family obligations who cannot take on heavier course loads. Almost forty percent of CUNY students work at least 20 hours per week in addition to pursuing a college degree.
Please do not allow these changes to the Tuition Assistance Program to be implemented. It may make the difference in many CUNY students being able to continue their education.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
