Subject: Restore funds to CUNY Daycare Programs

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I am writing to express my deep concern about the proposed cut to CUNY child care funding that will negatively affect the lives of CUNY student parents and their families. TANF funding allocated to CUNY child care was cut from $1.44 million to $0 in the Governor's 2011 Executive Budget. I urge you to support the restoration of these critical funds.

In 2002 base state funding for CUNY child care was decreased and replaced with $1.44 million in TANF funds. This base funding for CUNY child care has remained at the same level since 2002. The proposed decrease in the TANF funds would slide CUNY child care funding backwards to the level received before 2000, drastically reducing support for programs.

High quality early care and education programs are crucial to CUNY at a time when CUNY's enrollment is at its highest point ever. Women comprise 60% of CUNY's enrollment and 15% of CUNY students indicate that they provide support for children less than 12 years. Quality child care is essential to their retention and success. CUNY child care programs serve student parents and their children in developmentally appropriate and culturally diverse early childhood, school age, and infant/toddler programs. Professional teachers and staff provide flexible on-campus care and education to accommodate the needs of parents during the day, evenings and weekends.

CUNY child care programs serve over 2,200 student parents and their children in 18 campus-based centers. CUNY child care centers are a proven component of student parent success and serve as a key resource to many academic departments by providing a venue for student internships, fieldwork and research.

Research shows - Most children in low-income families have parents without any college education. If parents have low education levels, full-time employment does not protect their families from low earnings. (www.nccp.org) Please support CUNY student parent success by restoring $1.44 million in TANF funds to CUNY child care programs.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,
